Alternative Treatments for Mesothelioma

Posted by Jonathan Chamberlain on July 28, 2008

Jesse Herman of Mesothelioma Cancer Center has this to say about the value of alternative treatments for Mesothelioma:

There are many mesothelioma treatment options for those people who have the deadly cancer resulting from asbestos exposure. Fortunately, those with mesothelioma are finding alternative ways to cope and actually extending their quality of life.

Dietary supplements such as vitamins, minerals, herbs and amino acids all have their place in helpful alternatives, or additions, to existing therapy. Amino acids, vitamins and minerals are all necessary for the body to carry out essential life functions. Flaxseed, ginseng and garlic are all herbs known to reduce blood pressure.

It is important with supplements that they don’t disrupt your prescription medications so as with everything, consult your doctor first.

Meditation, massage and yoga are all great ways to release tension. It is important to not e with massage therapy that while most of the time it is helpful, it can actually worsen certain conditions. B applying deep pressure or physical manipulation, conditions like osteoporosis and cancer that has metastasized to the bone can be disruptive. If you are going to go this route, be sure it is with medical supervision.

Many people find themselves facing radiation and chemotherapy. Other therapies are quickly on the rise, such as gene therapy, immunotherapy and photodynamic therapy.

The objective behind gene therapy is to correct issues caused by a defective gene by using special techniques to replace the defective copy of a gene with a copy that functions properly.

Immunotherapy involves the manipulation of an individual’s immune system to assist in the fighting of disease. This fools the immune system into registering cancer cells as foreign, thus directing the immune system to destroy cancer cells.

Photodynamic therapy utilizes light energy to obliterate cancer cells, while leaving healthy cells mostly unaffected.
