OCCAM research on vitamin D – pathetic

OCCAM  – the National Cancer Institute’s Office for Cancer Complementary and Alternative Medicine – really doesn’t want to know the truth. In it’s 2010 Annual Report it discusses a study into whether Vitamin D could be preventative for lung cancer. Describing the study they reported: “The patients in the pilot study will receive 45 micrograms of calcitriol [considered by them to be the active form of vitamin D] every other week for 3 months.”  Now, compare this with what the vitamin D Council says on their website at http://www.vitamindcouncil.org : “Studies show large quantities of vitamin D3, also known as cholecalciferol, are synthesized in the skin in response to full-body summer sun exposure – about 10,000 international units (IU).1 nBecause this happens within minutes, overexposure is not necessary. In fact, one will have made all the vitamin D they are going to make for the day in about one-half the time it takes for their skin to turn pink.”

Now the conversion rate is 40 international units per microgram – so 10,000 units is 250 micrograms.  On a hot day you will get this effect from say 15-20 minutes in the sun full body exposure. One key question then is how are they going to regulate or monitor the amount of sunlight exposure their experimental group gets.

So: OCCAM are planning to test wholly inadequate levels of Vitamin D. This is one way to get the negative results that they want.

Note: The second possible issue is which form of vitamin D they use. Cholecalciferol and Calcitriol are not identical – and if you go to the following research summary: http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/22407227  you will find a comparison of their effects in a particular study. In truth there does not appear to be much difference between them. Though it would seem that cholecalciferol is marginally more effective (a lower quantity is needed to get the same results)

This is just crazy science.  I personally take 5-10,000 iu of vitamin D a day as a supplement and have done for well over a year. I feel good and last winter did not have the winter blues that I am prone to.
